Backup and disaster recovery for VMware ESXi

vmGuardian:  Backup and disaster recovery for VMware ESXi

As of 2014, VMware is the most widely distributed hypervisor in the x86 Server virtualisation market. If you are using VMware, then you need vmGuardian™ to ensure the best protection for your virtual machines. Built on ActiveImage Protector’s proprietary imaging technology, vmGuardian installs as a virtual appliance offering agentless backup of VMs, a web-browser based management interface and advanced features including Smart Sector Technology and Inline Data Deduplication and Compression (IDDC).

How does vmGuardian work?

vmGuardian installs as a virtual appliance.

It creates agentless incremental backups of virtual machines and virtual disks.

vmGuardian can restore a VM to the same host or migrate it to a new ESXi host.

You simply create a backup image and choose where you want to restore it.

Use vmGuardian’s Inline Data Deduplication Compression feature to save time and storage space when backing-up your virtual machines and virtual disks.

Main features

Agentless backup of virtual machines

Thanks to VMware’s vStorage API for Data Protection.

web based

Browser-based user interface

Browser-based user interface lets you choose the VMs or ESXi host for backup or restore to a specified location, define a group of virtual machines, schedule tasks, manage licenses and more.

incremental backups every 10 minutes

Scheduled incremental backup of multiple VMs

vmGuardian offers fast incremental backups, including backup of multiple VMs into a single backup image file.

unparalleled inline deduplication

Inline Data Deduplication Compression

Eliminate duplicate blocks of data in a single virtual disk or across multiple virtual disks.

support for Windows and Linux

Supports Windows and Linux file formats

vmGuardian supports Windows Server 2012 / R2, 2008 / R2, 2003 / R2, 2000 Server, Windows 8.x, 7, Vista and XP SP3 (above with NTFS file system) as well as Linux Ext3, Ext4, Swap and LVM.

flexible high speed recovery

Flexible restore options

Quickly and easily perform granular file and folder recovery, restore individual virtual disks or even entire virtual machines.

Backup features

  • Flexible backup scheduling
Backup tasks can be scheduled to be executed weekly, monthly or one-time only.
  • Network throttling
Define the maximum throughput in KBs / second if the backup target destination is located on a network share.
  • VM backup
Select VMs for backup from a host or resource pool in an ESXi host or vSphere virtualization platform. Multiple virtual machines can be backed-up and combined into a single image file.
  • AES-256 bit encryption
High-grade AES-256-bit protection. Intel processors with AES-NI can accelerate encryption performance by 3 to 10 times compared to software only implementation.
  • Consolidate incremental backup files
Automatically consolidate a predefined number of incremental backup files into a single incremental file, while keeping recovery points in the consolidated file.

Restoration & Migration features

  • Granular and bulk file and folder recovery
Easily recover individual or multiple files and folders from a backup image using the Mount Image File feature.
  • Restore and migrate VMs to same or different ESXi host
Individual virtual machines can quickly and easily be restored to the same ESXi host or migrated to another ESXi host.
  • Rename a virtual disk name when restoring
A virtual disk can be restored with a different virtual disk name, helping make sure you do not overwrite the original.
  • Boot Environment
Powered by ActiveImage Protector™, vmGuardian’s recovery environment allows you to backup and recover an entire ESXi host.

Additional features

  • Supports vMotion and VMware HA
Support for continuous incremental backup of virtual machines that have been migrated to a different host using vMotion or VMware HA.
  • CUI console
A console based interface on vmGuardian's appliance allows easy configuration of settings. The CUI Console automatically starts when the appliance is powered on.
  • ESXi host management
An ESXi host can be specified as the backup source and assigned a management role, with the resource pools and VM's listed under Host Information on the web console. Connections can be established or terminated as needed and the host's information can be hidden under Host Information when not connected.
  • Email notification
Notification emails, sent to an email address of your choice, can be triggered by both backup failure and/or success.
